Old Louisville sits directly south of downtown Louisville, bounded roughly by Kentucky Street, the University of Louisville, Sixth Street, and Interstate 65. It holds one of the largest concentrations of Victorian homes in the country, with about forty-eight square blocks of brick mansions, town houses, and converted apartment buildings. Central Park sits at the center, ringed by some of the area's most substantial houses.
Old Louisville runs on a fine grid of tree-lined streets, with most blocks holding three-story brick Victorians built between roughly 1870 and 1910. Many of the largest homes have been divided into apartments or condos, and others stand restored as single-family residences. The pedestrian-only St. James Court and Belgravia Court, two of the better-known blocks, hold a particularly dense run of restored mansions. Central Park, a six-block green space, anchors the middle of the area. The University of Louisville campus sits at the south end. The area connects on foot to downtown Louisville in about fifteen minutes, and to the SoBro restaurants along South Fourth Street.
Walk the loop of Central Park, then cross to St. James Court and follow the pedestrian path through Belgravia Court. From there, walk south on Fourth Street toward the University of Louisville to see how the housing density changes block to block.
