A pedestrian-friendly stretch with a lot packed in

The Highlands runs roughly three miles along Bardstown Road and Baxter Avenue, southeast of downtown Louisville. The blocks just off the main road are quiet and tree-lined, with brick bungalows, Victorian shotgun homes, and Cherokee Triangle's larger historic houses sitting close to the sidewalk.

The draw is how much sits within a short walk. The Bardstown Road corridor holds dozens of independent restaurants, coffee shops, bookstores, and music venues across a stretch of about a dozen blocks. A car is useful, but a Saturday here rarely needs one.

What you can do here

  • Walk or run the loops of Cherokee Park on the Scenic Loop or Beargrass Creek trails.
  • Cover dinner, a coffee, and a movie along Bardstown Road without moving the car.
  • Browse independent bookstores and record shops along the Bardstown Road corridor.
  • Reach downtown Louisville in about ten minutes by car outside of rush hour.
  • Choose among bungalows, shotgun homes, and larger historic houses in Cherokee Triangle.
  • Bike the connector roads to the Beargrass Creek Trail and the wider park system.

Best for first-time visit

Start at the Cherokee Triangle entrance to Cherokee Park, walk the Scenic Loop, then cut over to Bardstown Road around Eastern Parkway and walk north. You will pass several blocks of independent storefronts, residential side streets, and the older Cherokee Triangle homes off Willow Avenue.
