Fern Creek

A southeast Jefferson County community along Bardstown Road.
Fern Creek sits in southeast Jefferson County, about twelve miles southeast of downtown Louisville along Bardstown Road. The area built up in the mid-1900s as a small town outside the city and grew through subdivisions from the 1960s onward. Bardstown Road, the same road that runs through The Highlands closer in, serves as the main commercial corridor, with shopping, restaurants, and offices along most of its length.

What it is like to live here

Fern Creek runs as a settled suburban community at the southeastern edge of Jefferson County. The blocks near Bardstown Road hold older small frame houses and a few brick storefronts from the original small-town core. Subdivisions built between the 1960s and the 1990s surround the core, with mid-century ranches, split-levels, and two-story Colonials on moderately sized lots. Newer subdivisions at the eastern edge extend the housing into the 2000s and 2010s. The Gene Snyder Freeway runs through the area, putting downtown Louisville about twenty minutes away. Fern Creek Park provides public green space, and the Cooper Creek Wetland sits at the eastern edge.
