NuLu

A converted warehouse district along East Market Street, walking distance to downtown.
NuLu, short for New Louisville, runs along East Market Street between Jackson Street and Baxter Avenue, just east of downtown Louisville. The area built itself out of older brick warehouses and storefronts, with art galleries, restaurants, and design shops filling the ground floors and loft apartments above. Residential lofts and a handful of newer condo buildings sit a few blocks off the main strip.

What it is like to live here

NuLu reads as a working commercial district that turned residential at the edges. East Market Street holds the highest concentration of restaurants, galleries, and design shops, with most buildings two or three stories of brick. The cross streets, like Clay, Shelby, and Hancock, mix older warehouse conversions with newer four and five-story apartment buildings. Housing leans toward lofts, condos, and apartments, with a smaller stock of single-family shotgun homes on the residential edges. The area connects on foot to downtown Louisville, Butchertown, and the Whiskey Row corridor. The Big Four Bridge and Waterfront Park sit about fifteen minutes away on foot.

What you can do here

  • Walk to dozens of independent restaurants, galleries, and design shops along East Market Street.

  • Bike the Louisville Loop connections from the river edge.
