Welcome to Harrison County

Harrison County sits about 25 miles west of Louisville along I-64 and the Ohio River, with a population of roughly 40,500 across 485 square miles. Corydon is the county seat and served as Indiana's first state capital from 1816 to 1825.

Downtown Corydon preserves the original 1816 Capitol Building, the Governor Hendricks Headquarters, and the Constitution Elm site on a National Register historic district of about 20 square blocks. Butt Drugs on Capitol Avenue has operated as an independent pharmacy and soda fountain since 1952.

Indiana Caverns in the southern part of the county includes the longest mapped cave system in Indiana at more than 41 miles of passages, with public boat tours running daily. Squire Boone Caverns near Mauckport offers a second public cave system along with a working gristmill.

O'Bannon Woods State Park covers 2,294 acres of hardwood forest adjoining Harrison-Crawford State Forest, giving public access to more than 26,000 contiguous acres of protected land with hiking, horseback riding, and canoe access on the Blue River.

Commuting to Louisville runs 35 to 45 minutes along I-64 from most Corydon and Lanesville addresses. The Lanesville Heritage Weekend in September draws roughly 30,000 visitors over three days.

Housing ranges from historic 19th-century homes in downtown Corydon to rural acreage tracts of 5 to 40 acres throughout the surrounding county.
